As the tree grew, it saw the ships return from their voyages - most of them. The once mighty tree, now graying and broken, no longer heard the the sound of sails unfurling in the wind, or the sailors' tales of adventure. And it no longer saw the young sons and daughters continue on the course set by their forbearers. 

This cannot be, the tree thought. Is this really the end of the golden age of exploration? Who will carry on, braving the open sea, and who will travel to undiscovered lands? But there was no one left who could sail by the winds and currents, or navigate by the stars.

Unwilling to let the spirit of the great sailing ships die, with its last ounce of strength, the tree hurled itself into the sea, its thick trunk and long branches cracking and shattering into pieces as they met the forces of nature head-on. And it drifted out of the harbor, guided by the winds and currents, following the routes forged by generations before.
